Understand what an ATS may do

An applicant tracking system may store applications, extract information and support searches. Its behaviour depends on the platform and each employer’s configuration. No template guarantees passing a filter or receiving an interview. Clear, relevant information should remain your priority.

Choose a straightforward structure

For applications submitted through a form, a single column often supports a clear reading order. Use familiar headings such as Experience, Education and Skills. Write your email address and phone number as text rather than relying on icons alone.

  • Keep dates and job titles consistent.
  • Avoid turning the whole document into an image.
  • Check that PDF text can be selected and copied.
  • Put essential information in the main body of the document.

Match terminology honestly

Read the job description and use its terms when they accurately describe your experience. If you know a requested tool, name it explicitly. Do not add skills you lack, hidden keyword lists or unnatural repetitions. A person reviewing the document should still find it meaningful.

Check extraction and follow instructions

Copy your PDF text into a plain text editor and inspect the section order. This can reveal some issues, but it does not reproduce every ATS. If the application form extracts your details, review them before submitting.

Use the format the employer requests. If Word is required, submit Word and check its pagination. If PDF is accepted, use a file with readable text and a clear filename.
